- Celebrate Earth Day by Cleaning Up the Beaches!
- Looking for a way to give back for Earth Day but forgot to plan-et? 🌎 No worries — you can still sign up for the annual Washington Coast Cleanup on April 19! Make it a weekend adventure, or just come for the day. Either way, your help keeps our beaches clean, safe and fun for everyone. Last year, volunteers removed 16,193 lbs of trash — that’s like hauling away 53 black bears’ worth of garbage! 🐻♻️ (Wild, right?) But here’s the not-so-fun part: That trash didn’t just magically appear. It was left behind or washed up from human activity. Every plastic bottle, lost flip-flop and forgotten food wrapper can harm marine life, pollute our waters and turn beautiful beaches into dumping grounds. Imagine a sea otter tangled in fishing line, or a tiny snowy plover mistaking plastic for food. 😢 We can do better! When: Saturday, April 19, 2025 Where: Washington’s Pacific Coast and Salish Sea Times: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (some locations will vary due to tides) Sign up & get details at CoastSavers.org A Discover Pass is required for vehicle access on state-managed lands on April 19.

As part of this effort, they’re hosting Take Root, a fundraiser social, on May 31st at Eastside Community Center from 5:30-7:30PM. Take Root with them on May 31st! - The REAL ID Deadline is Finally, Actually Here on May 7th
- With Covid making changes to our protocols across many platforms, the Real ID deadline came and went many times. The deadline to have your identification updated is finally arriving and seems to be the actual enforcement date this time. After the May 7th deadline, US citizens will need to present this form of ID to board domestic flights, (these were already needed for international flights) as well as to enter federal buildings. While a standard driver’s license is not a REAL ID, you may have another form of identification that will pass these standards:
- An Enhanced Driver’s License, US Military ID, foreign passport, permanent resident card, or “green card” will be compliant to board domestic flights. While appointment times to get these items might be hard to come by, walk-ins are available, just expect a long wait. It can take 10 days to receive the physical form of identification but you should receive a temporary paper copy. If you have more questions, check here for the complete list of acceptable identification.

- Planning a Trip to Mount Rainier? Double-Check for Bridge Closures First
- The 103-year-old Carbon River Fairfax Bridge on State Route 165 near Mount Rainier National Park has been closed indefinitely due to worsening deterioration, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced. The 494-foot-long, single-lane bridge, built in 1921, is no longer safe for vehicle or pedestrian use after a recent inspection found new damage to its steel supports. The closure cuts off access to the Mowich Lake entrance and nearby recreation areas. Although an emergency detour route exists for first responders and local property owners, it remains closed to the public. The bridge has faced progressive restrictions over the years—most recently, a 16,000-pound weight limit in July 2024. However, WSDOT says no funding is currently available to replace the bridge, citing years of deferred maintenance due to limited resources. Engineers will conduct further analysis in the coming weeks.

Film & TV Reviews
- Film Review: Warfare By Elizabeth Mulloy
- When the trailer for Warfare, the latest feature from Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, debuted, it was quickly met with criticism echoing a familiar sentiment: “Americans will bomb your country and then return 20 years later to make a movie about how sad it made their soldiers.” In short, many assumed it was just another piece of American propaganda. But once you see who’s telling the story, it’s clear that Warfare isn’t glorifying war, it’s condemning it. Based on the memories of those who served this mission, including director Ray Mendoza, Warfare creates a harrowing depiction of modern warfare. Set in the backdrop of the Iraq war, we follow a platoon of Navy SEAL’s during a surveillance mission in Ramadi, Iraq. What starts off as a routine operation, turns a quiet neighborhood into a blood stained warzone.
- If you’re expecting Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza to deliver a clear-cut statement about America’s role in Iraq, you’ll likely be left wanting as Warfare is not interested in diving into the complicated politics of the Iraq war. Instead, Garland and Mendoza create an abstract and minimalist portrait of the Iraq war. We are given no details about the platoon’s mission, no insight into who they’re surveilling, and little sense of who these soldiers are beyond brief moments of causal banter. Most of the dialogue is terse military jargon, focused on relaying observations and coordinating with other units. But in this stark, stripped-down approach, Garland and Mendoza make their anti-war stance felt, emphasizing the senseless destruction and dehumanizing repetition of conflict, where meaning is lost and survival becomes the only objective.
- Using techniques drawn from documentary filmmaking Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza waste no time plunging the audience into the Iraq War. Unfolding in real time, anchoring us besides the platoon as they’re hurled into the heat of the battle. When the soldiers are forced to take shelter in a civilian home, we’re trapped there with them, hemmed in by encroaching enemy forces. The tension tightens, the space closes in, and the atmosphere turns suffocating, an unbearable pressure cooker that threatens to break everyone inside. The sound of design is punishing as it shakes you to your core. Bullets whipsing past your ears, the thunderous roar of a F-18, and the sickening sounds broken bones, tearing flesh, and agonized screams of the wounded echoing through your head, Warfare is an assault of the sensories as you are dragged straight into the unforgiving trenches of modern combat. And by the end of the skirmish, what was accomplished other than a suburban block being destroyed and several men being wounded and dead.
- Perfectly encapsulating the pointlessness of war. Led by a cast of some of the most prominent rising actors in Hollywood, including Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Charles Melton, Joseph Quinn, Kit Connor, Michael Gandolfini and many more, the actors understood the assignment. Whether it is taking command of a terrifying moment, freezing when you are so concussed that you can’t think anymore, or the gut-wrenching cries of being gravely wounded, each actor commits to the chaos. Where you don’t just witness their performances, you feel them in your bones as it is a perfect example of the power of a unified ensemble.
- In the end, Warfare is anything but American propaganda, it’s a stripped-down, unflinching anti-war film that drops the audience into the chaos without explanation or agenda. By denying context and emphasizing the disorienting, traumatic experience of combat, Garland and Mendoza craft a haunting portrait of war’s senseless destruction. Alex Garland continues to prove himself as a director of vision and precision, while Ray Mendoza emerges as a vital new voice in the genre, bringing a level of authenticity and intensity that few war films achieve. Together, they deliver a harrowing and unforgettable experience.

- TV Series Review: The Pitt Season 1, by Elizabeth Mulloy
- If there’s one genre that has had a firm grip on television for over five decades, it’s the medical drama. From M*A*S*H and St. Elsewhere to ER, Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, House, and many more, these shows have consistently delivered a dependable blend of emotional intensity, medical mystery, romantic entanglements, and plenty of tear-jerking moments. Yet despite its staying power, the genre has largely remained stagnant over the past decade. Most networks still have one in their lineup, and they tend to follow the same tried-and-true formula, episode after episode. In short, the genre has hit a creative plateau. That is, until MAX’s latest series, The Pitt, came along to shake things up. Set over the course of a grueling 15-hour shift and unfolding in real time, The Pitt doesn’t just breathe new life into the medical drama, it redefines it entirely.
- We follow Dr. Michael “Robby” Rabinavitch and his team of doctors, residents, med students, and nurses as they power through a relentless shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, better known as “The Pitt.” Each episode covers one intense hour in real time, as the team treats a nonstop stream of patients facing everything from measles and gunshot wounds to childbirth, broken bones, heart attacks and much more. Amid the chaos, they struggle to maintain their composure, losing patients, enduring verbal abuse and physical threats, and guiding families through the darkest moments of their lives, all while trying not to fall apart themselves.
- From its opening minutes, The Pitt makes it clear, this is not your typical medical drama. The show kicks off with a graphic de-gloving injury, setting the tone for its unflinching realism. The Pitt goes all-in on medical accuracy, showcasing injuries and treatments with an almost clinical precision. From a wide range of trauma cases to what is reportedly the first televised vaginal birth to actually depict the baby’s head crowning, the attention to detail is extraordinary. Even my mother, a former oncology nurse, praised the show for its authenticity. And it’s no coincidence, many of the background actors are real medical professionals, bringing an added layer of realism that few shows in the genre can claim.
- Beyond its medical accuracy, The Pitt excels at capturing the raw chaos of the emergency room. The show plunges viewers into a claustrophobic, sterile maze filled with blaring alarms, panicked cries, and nonstop motion—an atmosphere where every second could mean the difference between life and death. You feel the frustration of patients endlessly waiting for care, the doctors’ exasperation when their advice is ignored, and the deep, gut-wrenching grief of families losing loved ones. The ER is portrayed as a relentless pressure cooker, testing the limits of everyone inside it. Watching The Pitt, you can’t help but wonder: how do healthcare workers stay sane in the face of so much trauma, day after day?
- When your series is anchored by a massive and wildly talented ensemble cast, featuring both rising stars and A-list names, you’re in for a masterclass in character work. The Pitt wastes no time introducing its sprawling roster. By the second episode, you already have a strong sense of who these 15+ characters are, what drives them, and how they connect with one another. That’s no small feat. It’s a testament to both the cast and the writing team that they’re able to pull this off with such efficiency and clarity, especially when shows like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power or The Wheel of Time are still struggling to establish their characters after multiple seasons.
- However, at the center of The Pitt’s powerhouse cast is Noah Wyle as Dr. Robby. Nearly 25 years after ER, Wyle returns to the world of medical drama with a performance that feels both grounded and devastatingly human. He captures the full emotional spectrum of being a doctor today—frustration, anger, sorrow, hope, and fleeting moments of joy, with incredible nuance. Will he finally snag that elusive Emmy? Who knows. But one thing’s for sure: he’s giving Adam Scott (Severance) a run for his money.
- Ultimately, The Pitt is a bold and invigorating reimagining of a genre that has long rested on its laurels. It takes the familiar rhythms of medical drama and reinvigorates them with unflinching realism, sharp writing, and a deeply human core. The result is not only one of the most compelling medical series in recent memory, but a sobering, empathetic portrait of modern healthcare. Come awards season, don’t be surprised if The Pitt emerges as the dark horse contender critics can’t stop talking about.
